Like Family

It wasn’t his physical pain that caused tears to come to Mark’s eyes when he discussed his medication with ResolutionCare nurse Jessica Howard during his intake visit a year and a half ago.  It was the relief that he and his wife, Dana, felt when Jessica explained clearly that ResolutionCare took his pain and symptom management seriously, would not be judging or shaming, and gave him the respect of hearing his story completely.  Like too many Native Americans, for years Mark had been treated as drug-seeking by healthcare professionals when he was, in fact, under medicated.  For a proud man, the pain of being stigmatized was worse than the physical pain Mark felt, and so he had nearly given up on seeking control of his pain.  Nurse Jessica, with her big laugh and colorful tattoos, let Mark and Dana know that they would be treated as family. I’ll let Dana describe their experience with ResolutionCare in her own words:

Dear ResolutionCare,

Dana and MarkI am writing this on behalf of my husband, Mark Hailey, and myself, Dana Hailey.  Mark is a member of the Hoopa Valley Tribe. We have had the pleasure of being patients of ResolutionCare since February, 2017.  We have been married for thirty-eight years and cannot imagine not being in one another’s lives. Mark is the actual patient, but I wrote “we” because the people at ResolutionCare make every effort to check on me and my well-being as much as they do Mark.

Mark has been ill for many, many years.  Because of his medical conditions, he was basically living in one bedroom, not able to ambulate and too ill to leave his chair.  Through these years he has had many doctors and many hospital visits. All of the doctor visits were very long, frustrating and usually ended in tears (on my part).  It felt like none of the many providers took the time to listen to our concerns. That is, until a social worker at St. Joseph Hospital in Eureka referred us to ResolutionCare and they came to Mark’s room to see how they could help us get Mark home.

Little did we know at the time, but that’s the day Mark’s care became important to someone other than myself.  After all of the years I spent advocating for my husband’s medical problems and health care needs, I now had a team working with me.  The change from two “Code Blues” in the hospital a year ago to how Mark is doing today can only be described as miraculous. In addition to divine intervention from God, we attribute his better health to the support and help we get from ResolutionCare.  Mark now has a quality of life that he didn’t have before and can interact with family, especially our grandchildren, whom we love dearly.

The team at ResolutionCare have worked so hard to manage his pain and are always a phone call away.  They offer spiritual guidance as well, if wanted. They treat us like family and we love and appreciate them as family also.  From the team who answer the phone to Dr. Fratkin, we have never been treated with so much kindness, respect, and compassion as we have with the staff from ReslutionCare.  

I truly feel that my husband wouldn’t have made it, had it not been for the wonderful staff and providers at ResolutionCare.  I thank God every day for sending them to us.
